Recycling Your Metal with Us

Open to the Public.
6 Days a Week. Rain or Shine.

CASS is committed to helping individuals recycle their ferrous (steel) and non-ferrous metals (aluminum, brass, copper, stainless steel, and more) as long as it is compliant with our Metal Acceptance Policy.

Customers with non-ferrous metals must unload at the Public Dock prior to entering the Steel Yard. Customers are not allowed in CASS’s main yard with garbage, oil, wood, or loose tires. This policy allows us to process recyclable material efficiently, make prompt payments, and provide excellent service.

How to Recycle & Sell Your Metal

BATTERY POLICY

At CASS, the safety of our staff and our clients is our top priority. We have established a policy to ensure the safe recycling of batteries and to maintain a safe environment:

Battery Types Accepted:

CASS only accepts lead-acid batteries for recycling. To guarantee the safety of our facility, personnel, and customers, alkaline, lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, or any other types of EV batteries are prohibited.

When bringing lead-acid batteries for recycling, our team will guide you through the proper process to ensure safe handling and recycling.

Battery Policy Violation:

  1. First Occurrence: Friendly Reminder
If non-lead-acid batteries are inadvertently presented for recycling, we will provide a courteous reminder about our battery type restrictions. You will be requested to remove the batteries and dispose of them appropriately.

  2. Second Occurrence: Temporary Suspension
Your access to CASS will be temporarily suspended.

  3. Third Occurrence: Service Ban
Regrettably, if prohibited items are presented for recycling a third time, we will ban your account and you will permanently be denied access to our recycling facility.

Safety is the top priority at CASS, and we count on your cooperation to prevent accidents and injuries. We appreciate your understanding and partnership in adhering to our battery recycling policy.

CATALYTIC CONVERTERS

Due to the ongoing issues and fraudulent activities associated with catalytic converter recycling, we have decided not to purchase catalytic converters. These items have become a target for criminal activity, and it is important for us to play a role in reducing the ability for such actions to succeed. This decision reflects our commitment to supporting the safety of our clients, community, and staff while addressing this growing concern. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

CLOSED CYLINDERS

Cylinders in a melting facility are explosive and dangerous! CASS will only receive closed cylinders, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, etc., with a minimum 3” visible hole in the side and with the valve removed. It is prohibited to puncture or prepare this type of material at our facility. Illegal dumping is a crime punishable by a $1000 fine (Sec. 374.3 B Penal Code). We will report any illegal activities to the City of Oakland to aid in prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

JUNK VEHICLES

California State Law mandates that a scrap metal processor can only purchase a vehicle as scrap by adhering to one of the following:

  1. The seller must have a junk slip from the DMV in the seller’s name along with a valid ID at the time of sale.

  2. The seller must be a licensed auto dismantler and must also provide a valid copy of their Auto Dismantler License for CASS to keep on file at the time of sale or beforehand.

Note: Pink slip, registration, title, transfer slip from a wrecking yard, or proof of purchase from an auction are not acceptable!

REFRIGERATORS

Refrigerators will be accepted if the freon has been properly disposed of and the compressor (black sealed unit) has been removed prior to arriving at CASS. Please sell the sealed unit at the Public Dock before proceeding to the Steel Yard to sell the refrigerator.

TIRES

You may be on CASS property with one spare tire, which includes the cleaning area across from the main entrance. There will be a charge for any additional tires in your vehicle as follows to offset the cost for CASS to properly dispose of the tires:

  • Small Tires = Car Tires
    Small Tire: $6.00
Small Tire (On the Vehicle): $10.00

  • Medium Tire = Light Truck Tires, Pickup Trucks‍
    Medium Tire: $10.00
Medium Tire (On the Vehicle): $15.00

  • Large Tires = Semi-Truck Tires
    Large Tire: $20.00
Large Tire (On the Vehicle): $30.00

Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors (TPMS) must be removed from all tires. TPMS contain lithium ion batteries and are not accepted by CASS. Customers must take TPMS and batteries with them. Do not throw TPMS in the garbage as these can cause a fire.

AFTER HOURS PRICING POLICY

In order to service clients after hours and to offset the additional cost of staff at overtime pay rates, pricing after regular business hours will be reduced accordingly.

CASS FOOTWEAR POLICY

At CASS, the safety of our staff and our clients is our top priority. To ensure the highest level of safety, customers are required to wear closed-toe shoes that adequately protect the feet. Open-toe shoes, Crocs or similar footwear, slippers, and going barefoot are strictly prohibited. It is essential that the chosen footwear provides proper support, grip, and protection for the feet while on the premises.
